Abstract
Objectives: To develop an appropriate strategy to control periodontal diseases, we need to understand the status and trends of these diseases. The purpose of this study was to determine the changes and trends in a number of periodontal disease patients during two decades in Korea.
Methods: The authors used data of National Survey of Patients from 1990 to 2008. This survey was carried out every 3 years. Data were gathered from dental hospitals and dental clinics. Sampling was conducted from a registered list of hospitals and clinics of the National Health Insurance Corporation. The sampling strata were the type of institution (hospital/clinic) and location (province/metropolitan). All information about the patients in one day including the type of disease and content of treatments etc. were surveyed.
Results: The percentage of patients with periodontal diseases was increasing. Periodontal patients in dental hospitals and clinics constituted 11.3% of all dental patients in 1990, and 26.1% in 2008. Female periodontal disease patients were more prevalent than male periodontal disease patients until 1999, but the percentage of male patients was greater than that of female patients from 2002 until now. The number of periodontal disease patients was steadily increasing among 40 year-olds and higher age levels.
Conclusions: The increasing number and percentages of periodontal disease patients suggests that Korea needs to change its strategy to this disease from treatment to prevention and continuous care. This change can be induced by prevention oriented oral health programs and a health insurance benefit policy.
